10 Lovely Things You Can Do With Your Beard

Beards are great. We love beards. You love beards. Everyone loves beards (even if they say they don’t).

Sometimes, beards could do with being a little more lovely. Just a touch more fabulous. We’re sure you’ll agree. So, we’ve scoured that internet to find 10 lovely things you can do with your beard. Or someone else’s beard, so long as you ask them first.

1. Colour it in with stuff. Go full on Merbeard, or Manicorn, or whatever we’re calling it now. Get creative. From hair chalk to colourful mascaras, there are plenty of ways to add a splash of colour to you beard.

2. Stick some flowers in it. Flowers are great, flowers and beards are even better. Be a friend of the bees and looks fabulous whilst you do it. #TheBeardsAndTheBees

3. Put colourful beads in it. Maybe you don’t want to colour in the beard itself but you want lots of pretty colours in there? Tie some beads in it! If you happen to be at Mardi Gras, so much the better.

4. Fill it with snacks for later. It’s a known fact that beards will capture food, so why delay the inevitable? Fill that face with food! Then eat it later. Before it gets sticky.

5. Even more flowers. Why stop with your beard? If you’ve got enough up top, you can get all floral up there too.

6. Glitter it up. If your hands are full carrying your fabulous unicorn purse, where are you going to keep all of your glitter? In your beard of course.

7. Store your pencils in it. Does your beard need to reflect your artistic endeavours? Perhaps you’re a teacher and you need to keep spares for your students? Or maybe you just really love pencils?

8. Light it up. With little bulbs, put the lighters down. Let your beard be a light in the darkness. A beacon of fuzzy hope. Find things in the dark really easily.

9. Get festive with it. Beard baubles are really the tip of the iceberg here, but you can’t beat a classic festive look.

10. Bead it up again. Try a more conservative bead, if colours aren’t your thing. You’ll still look flawless. If you’ve got a really thick beard, you could even tie it up to tame it.

Halfway through the week. 2 more days, we got this! #humpday #beardbeads by @lykosleather #lykosleather

There are many ways you can jazz up your beard. The only limit is your imagination… Mostly.

So get out there and put things in your beard! Make it a say something beard day!

Guest Post – 5 Rules for Dating With a Beard

Guest Blog 5 Rules For Dating With a Beard

Having a beard can make you look a lot more masculine. A beard also puts you into a dating niche that can work in your favour. There are many misconceptions surrounding men’s facial hair and women’s desires, but the bottom line is that beards can be sexy and a great asset to your personal style.

When you are dating, use these 5 rules to make sure your beard works for you.

Women Love Beards

There is a lot of mixed information when it comes to women’s beard preferences, but almost half of women like kissing men with beards. However less than 30% of men grow beards, so straight away by growing a beard the odds are on your side.

Confidence is really important when it comes to dating, and you need to see your beard as a big part of who you are. Do that and all the other rules are going to be a lot easier to follow.

Rule #1: Wear your beard with pride and confidence.

Keep It Together

Growing a beard is about a lot more than just letting your facial hair grow out. There used to be a whole industry dedicated to male facial hair in days gone by, and although it’s taken it’s time that industry is making a comeback.

If you want to have a strokeable beard, you need to put in the work. You’ll be needing a beard comb, some good clippers for maintenance among other things, and a daily beardcare ritual to top it off.

On top of styling and maintenance you’ll want to be keeping an eye out for stray bits of food – it happens, we all know it. No one wants to kiss a beard with food stuck in it!

Rule #2: Daily beard maintenance is a must!

Plan Your Beard Out

Much in the same way a person thinks about a hairstyle as a part of their fashion, a bearded man must look at his facial hair as a part of his overall style.

Whilst it might sound fun and easy to just grow out a great big bushy beard, with a huge greased up handlebar mustache, you might find that some people would prefer to be seen with someone well groomed. Your beard needs to fit with your partner’s style, as much as your own.

A great way to approach this is to make sure that your beard is a good fit for your face. There are a lot of great options for beard styles, and you will have no problem finding one that fits you perfectly. You might have to do a bit of experimenting with styles to start off, depending on how your beard grows.

It’s important to have a purpose, don’t just let a beard happen. Grow it with intention, groom it, style it, shape it.

Struggling to come up with a style of your own? Most high-street barbers will cater to beards these days, so why not ask their opinion?

Rule #3: Have a vision for your beard and make it happen.

Maintenance!

Planning to keep that beard for a while? You’ll have to keep it in good shape! Which means buying quality shampooing and conditioning products.

The way you treat your facial hair is going to make a huge difference in how it feels to the touch and one of the biggest things that people love about beards is running their fingers through them.

If you don’t take care of your beard hair, it isn’t going to look right, nor will it feel great in your girlfriend’s hands.

Rule #4: Buy and use great hair care products on your beard.

Asset v. Liability

Your beard can be a big turn-on or a big turn-off, depending on how well you take care of it. So you have to make sure your beard is an asset that works for you, and not a liability.

If you’ve followed rules 1-4, then you’re beard’s going to be in a great place. But you’ve got to keep up that personal discipline, to keep that beard game strong.

Don’t be put off by the occasional off comment from your girlfriend either, no beard is going to be loved by a woman in the same way you love it.

Don’t be too put off by the occasional but of constructive criticism on your beard either, especially not from your partner (they’re going to be seeing it most regularly after all!). No one’s going to love your beard the way you do, so an outside opinion can sometimes help.

Rule #5: Love your beard and make it an asset that works for you.

#Beardcare Review – Beard Lab Darwin Beard Butter

We do love an extra special treat for our beards here at Bristlr, and Beard Lab’s Darwin Beard Butter is just that. So you can imagine our delight when we were sent our very own pot of the lovely stuff to try out.

Beard butter is a new one for me; I’ve tried oils, balms and waxes, but never butters. I have to say, it’s been a pleasant surprise.

1

Unlike a beard balm, Darwin Beard Butter isn’t really useful for styling. Instead it’s really nourishing – with regular use expect your beard to be incredibly soft and silky. Couple that with regular use of beard oil, such as The Scientist, and you’ll have a super strokeable beard in no time.

The scent took a little bit of getting used to for me – it might be because I read the label, which comes with a handy mention of “contains nut oils,” so maybe my brain was telling me it smells very nutty. But after a couple of uses, the citrus-y scents really started to come through, and I do love a citrus-y scent. If you love lemons or Starburst, you’ll love the scent of Darwin Beard Butter.

3

This stuff is simple and easy to use, just scoop a small amount out on the tip of your finger and rub it in to your hands (first time you use it, the butter may be a little solid but it melts fairly easily if you just rub your fingers on the surface). After that rub it in to your beard, enjoy those lovely scents wafting up, and congrats; you have buttered your beard! If you have a long or thick beard you might need to do a couple of applications, but such are the risks of being so beardy.

2

Even if you do have a lengthy beard, Darwin Beard Butter will last you a while with regular use. I’ve had my tub for just over a week, used daily and barely even made a dent yet. So rest assured, you’re definitely getting value for money here – expect your tub to last about two months.

So if you’re after a new beard product to soften and tame your bristles, we couldn’t recommend Beard Lab’s Darwin Beard Butter enough. This one has the Bristlr stamp of approval.

#Beardcare Review – Totem Wolf Blend 79

If you’ve been paying close attention to our social media lately, you’ll know that we love the Totem Wolf brand. Their professionally crafted beard oils, and other beardcare products, have been keeping our beards bushy, bright and beautiful for a while now.

I’ve been lucky enough to sample a few of the lovely beardcare concoctions at Totem Wolf HQ, they were even kind enough to get Bristlr to Pride! But let’s talk about Blend 79 (as seen in GQ Magazine) and why you should get in to it. Check at the end of this article for a store link!

1

Have you ever thought you need more variety in your beard oil? Want to be greeted by a different scent each time you give it a sniff? Blend 79 has an eclectic mix of carefully selected scents that all come together to make one beautifully sweet sniff.

When the scent first hits you, you’ll be greeted with the sweet yet minty top notes of Grapefruit and Peppermint. These scents are great mood boosters, and combined are great to help with depression, colds and even headaches. The oils are also antibacterial and antiseptic, so no nastiness in your beard! And those are just the top notes!

It doesn’t stop there. Shortly after the initial application, as the top notes begin to fade, it’s time for the heart notes to kick in! A strong combination of Rosemary and Clary Sage.

If you’re feeling a bit run down, the Rosemary is a great mind booster. It’s a fresh, minty scent with a woody undertone (for that touch of masculinity, if that’s what you’re after). The Clary Sage mixes well, with a sweet, nutty scent that calms and helps with stress.

Fun fact, Clary Sage is also an aphrodisiac. Use with caution! If you know what I mean…

A little while longer and the base notes of Cedarwood and Patchouli Dark come out.

The Cedarwood, as the name suggests, is a very woody scent, with a touch of warmth. What’s that? Perfect for the winter? Perfect Christmas present for your bearded buddies? Yeah, that’s what I thought you said. More mind clearing scents to follow with the Patchouli Dark oil, which is deliciously sweet and rich, with added earthy tones.

So, how would I describe Totem Wolf’s Blend 79? Well, it’s definitely a journey of a scent. It’s a complexly sweet scent, that evolves whilst it’s on your beard! Who doesn’t want a dynamic scented beard? I know I do!

Speaking from experience, I can tell you that Totem Wolf beard oil’s are worth every penny. You get a lot for your money, not just in quantity (the bottles last a long time) but also quality. Each bottle is delicately blended with care and attention to detail. They also look super classy.

3

What’s that? You want your own bottle? Or thinking it would make a great present for your beardy pal this Christmas (Winter is coming, just sayin’)? Get Blend 79 here!

Beard Elitism #DontDoIt

It sounds like a joke, right? But it’s not.

Let’s not pretend we haven’t all seen posts on social media about beards, THEY’RE EVERYWHERE! And some of them aren’t too friendly. I’m not saying we need wrapping in cotton wool, or big bushy beards. But as individuals we can do something to make the world a better place to live in…and be less horrible on social media.

Okay, so lets talk Beard Elitism – it sucks. So much.

Do you remember when you first started growing a beard? When you fell in love with the hair growing out of your face? It was great, right? Then the trend on social media set in (which we at Bristlr have a lot to thank for, really).

Some of you will have stuck to your guns, you had a beard and you loved it. Some of you decided to back out and get rid of the beard, because trends can be a pain to keep up with, which is entirely your prerogative. But then there was heat from both sides for some of the more folicly challenged, and it was kind of unfair.

First, lets look in to the things that affect beard growth.

Genetics! Literally beyond anyone’s control. So what if someone can’t grow a beard because of their genes? Maybe they didn’t want one in the first place. Leave ’em be. “Supplements,” you say? Yeah, have fun with those side effects…

Stress! A good diet and plenty of sleep help out a lot with beard growth. So when someone’s particularly stressed and struggling to do either of those things, it’s going to have an effect on their beard. You’re going to kick someone when they’re down by berating the beard that in your eyes isn’t good enough? Feel good about yourself? You shouldn’t.

Exercise! Some of us are just too damn busy, and hitting the gym after a long day at work isn’t always top of the priority list. So cut us some slack and take your opinions elsewhere.

Those are just three things, and they’re all sort of beyond control. Notice how I put genetics top of the list though? No one can control that, not even you, with your opinions.

It might seem like I’m getting a little irritable, right? Here’s the thing – I’m fairly lucky. Despite being plagued with mental health issues (things just got personal up in here), having very little time to exercise and, let’s be honest, a terrible diet, I’m somehow blessed with (what many would consider) a “pretty good” beard. Genetics. Despite that, every now and then someone will happily point out that my beard’s looking whispy, a bit thin or a little patchy.

First off, thanks, that makes me feel great. Second, why did you have to say anything anyway? Third, remember that bit about mental health issues and kicking someone when they’re down? Yeah. You just did all that. And I didn’t even ask for an opinion. Go you.

You can say I’m taking this a little too seriously, but let’s be honest if you’re going out of your way to upset people, you need to have a word with yourself.

It’s not just beards either – all over social media people are commenting on all aspects of other peoples’ bodies. Like it’s their right to tell someone else how they should look. It isn’t.

We’re all about the beards here at Bristlr. So we do what we do to keep the beard community happy, whatever the shape, size and thickness of their beards. But that doesn’t mean we don’t care about everyone else! So, we say; Beard Elitism #DontDoIt. But lets lay off on judging people for their bodies and they way they present themselves.  Whether you have a big, bushy beard, or a little bit of bristle, you do you, and let others’ do the same.

Last week I was delighted to hear the Bristlr team had been invited to Totem Wolf’s Premium Beard Oil Launch. I couldn’t have said yes faster.
